This document will cover the day to day usage of SwitchThat BoilerGuardian through the BoilerGuardian web site.

Chapter 1. Introduction

Welcome to BoilerGuardian.

SwitchThat BoilerGuardian makes your boiler "smart" by retrofitting monitoring onto it. It then enables you to monitor your boiler when you are away from home, proactively monitoring its status and alerting you to any changes or issues.

You can do everything through the portal which can be reached at https://www.boilerguardian.com and then clicking Your Guardians on the menubar.

On successful login you will be taken to the Home Screen.

Chapter 3. Home Screen

If this is the first time that you are logging in you will see the screen below. You can now add your first Guardian. In most cases your Installer will have already done this step for you so that you don't need to do it yourself.

No Guardians on first login

Click Add a Guardian and fill in the 4 words from your Guardian. Choose whether you are the Installer or Owner. Then click Continue.

Note

You can enter the words without using the mouse. As you start typing each word a drop-down will try to auto-complete what you are typing. Use the arrow keys to select the required word, and press Enter. Then press Tab to advance to the next field.

You will now see the first of your Guardians.

You can repeat the steps for adding your Guardians multiple times, and your list of Guardians will grow longer.

Your Installer may have already arranged it so that your Guardians are associated with your account, so you may not need to add them yourself.

The Pressure and Temperature will be displayed and coloured orange or red if they have passed your configured thresholds. There may also be a timer icon if there has been a connection issue for a long period. There can also be an envelope icon and mobile phone icon to signify that you have enabled notification by email or SMS.

You can expand the Help section at the bottom of the screen for a more detailed description of the icons.

If you have more than one Guardian in your list, ones with issues will be shown at the top of the list.

Clicking on the name of a Guardian will drill down into more information, depending on your role. This is now described in Chapter 4, View Guardian.

Chapter 4. View Guardian

When you click on a Guardian, you will be able to view information about it. Depending on your role to the Guardian, you will be able to see one or more of the following tabs.

4.1. Readings

The Readings tab shows the most recent readings gathered from your Guardian. Readings are typically taken every minute, so you can update the values by clicking the Refresh button.

If your role permits it, you may be able to view historical data by clicking the History button. The graphs shown will depend on the Readings that have been recorded by your Guardian.

4.6. Advanced

The Advanced tab contains some important features that you should review.

You will be able to find your four word phrase, should you require it again. This should rarely be shared other than between Owners and Installers.

You will also be able to choose how long the data recorded will be retained for. You can choose between Forever, 12 months, 6 months and 3 months. Data older than the selected period will be pruned by a background job once a day.

It is also possible to Delete your Guardian from the system. This will purge its settings and history, and cannot be undone. The Guardian can take a few minutes to disappear, depending on how much historical data it has.

If your Guardian reconnects and starts sending readings it will be recreated again, and you can re-add it to your account.

Chapter 5. Edit Guardian

While viewing a Guardian, if your role is Owner or Installer you will be able to click the Edit button at the top-right to update the Boiler information and update the thresholds.

Depending on your Role, you will be able to set details about the boiler, and set thresholds for alerting.

Chapter 6. Roles

Roles control the access rights that you have to each Guardian. You may be the Owner of your own Guardian, set as a Family member for your brother's, and a Guest while your friend is away on holiday.

The roles currently available are:

  • Guest

  • Tenant

  • Friend

  • Family

  • Landlord

  • Owner

  • Installer

Guests can view the current readings. Friends can also view historical data and enable email alerts. Family members are like friends, but can re-share a Guardian as you trust them more. Owners can do nearly everything. Installers can also set the boiler types and further info.

Chapter 7. Sharing

You can give someone else you know access to a Guardian from the Users tab (see Section 4.4, “Users”) by clicking on Share this Guardian.

You can fill in an email address and select the role that you want them to have. The list of available roles shown will depend on your role.

Now click Share and an email will be sent to set up the user. If they do not yet have an account they will first need to register.

Chapter 8. Notifications

BoilerGuardian has a sophisticated Notification system which can email or SMS you when thresholds are crossed.

The thresholds will normally be set by your Installer, and can be further tweaked on the Edit Guardian screen (see Chapter 5, Edit Guardian).

You can then enable and disable alerting on the Alerts tab (see Section 4.3, “Alerts”).

Notification emails will show the Guardians which have changes, as well as a reminder of existing Guardians with issues.

If a threshold is crossed multiple times in a short interval (flip flopping), then emails will be suppressed for a few hours.

Chapter 9. User Profile and Sign out

At the top-right of the screen you will be a button to view your profile settings.

You can Sign out if you are using a shared computer.

You will be shown your Username, Full name and Timezone. You can also check your email address and mobile number for alerting. If there are any changes, you can click Edit. You will also be able choose a different password.

Chapter 10. Bookmarking sites

If you find yourself regular visiting https://www.boilerguardian.com or http://boilerguardian.local frequently, consider bookmarking the links (or adding them to your favourites, depending on your terminology).

There's often a star you can click on the address bar, or some other obvious way to bookmark web pages.

If you are on an Apple iPad or iPhone, there is another easy way to add a link to the web site to your Home screens.

In Safari visit https://www.boilerguardian.com/app/install. You will receive a popup asking for permission to allow the configuration profile to be downloaded. A profile is Apple's name for a bundle of configuration information. This profile contains a browser 'web clip' with a link to the BoilerGuardian site. Click Allow.

On a recent version of iOS you will now receive a popup requesting that you go to your Settings to install the profile. Older versions of iOS will allow you to install the profile using popups.
